Fibre Broadband

You may have noticed last year contractors installing new cables on telephone poles around the village. They were installing “overhead” fibre to bring high speed broadband to Mill Green and Nosterfield End under a Government-sponsored intervention scheme through the County Council for areas with broadband speeds below 30 Mbps. Mill Green and Nosterfield End were too far from the cabinet (in Carsey Hill) to be able to offer the higher speeds. Shudy Camps itself was ineligible since OpenReach were already offering higher speeds to the village (though many of us don’t seem to get them!).

The Government also has a Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme which offers grants to groups of customers who pledge to take a high speed fibre service if available. Again this is administered through the County Council. This makes it possible for villages to get service – see for example Spaldwick.

Eventually everyone will be connected by fibre, giving a much faster and more reliable connection. OpenReach, and others, want to replace the old copper cables with fibre because they are cheaper to install and run, and more reliable. But their priority is urban areas, and small villages are well down the list except through subsidised schemes like this.

The first step is to find out how many people might take the service. If you are interested in participating in a scheme, please indicate by emailing me at john.haine@shudycamps.org.uk, giving your name, fixed phone number and address, and if if you know say who your existing broadband supplier is. We need to move quite quickly as the scheme end next April.

Please note that if you live in Mill Green or Nosterfield End you should already be able to upgrade to fibre – go to https://www.bt.com/broadband/deals/ to enter your postcode and check availability – even if you actually pay some other provider they use BT’s cables.

Speed warning sign coordinator

Shudy Camps shares two “Mobile Vehicle Activated Signs” – MVAS –  on a rota with 7 other Cambridgeshire parishes.  These can be mounted on handy brackets fixed to various speed limit and other posts, and indicate vehicle speed to drivers, flashing if over the local speed limit.  They also log speed data through the village to help make the case for more enforcement or changes to the limits.  The Parish Council wants to expand the team looking after this activity and one or more volunteers are sought to help.  Activities could include:

  • Collecting the sign from the previous parish in the rota as needed about every 4 – 5 weeks
  • Programming the sign for the locations for deployment in the Paarish
  • Mounting the sign and keeping an eye on it
  • Downloading data from the sign and doing simple analysis to extract statistics
  • Recovering the sign, erasing data and recharging ready for the next Parish.

If you are interested in helping please contact the Clerk or Cllr. John Haine through the contact details given on this website.

PARISH COUNCIL WEBSITE

Shudy Camps Parish Council is seeking a volunteer from Shudy Camps, Nosterfield End or Mill Green to take over as “webmaster” for the Parish Council website and email system.  Tasks will include:

  • Reviewing this website to make it more useful, readable and accessible
  • Keeping the website up-to-date with the latest Parish Council documents
  • Suggesting and implementing changes to the site to provide useful and essential community information
  • Maintaining the Council email addresses and as far as possible providing help to Council members.

The role will report to the Parish Clerk and through him to the Council chair.  The ideal person will have a good working knowledge of IT, Microsoft Outlook and other email clients, and ideally WordPress.  If you are interested please contact the Clerk using the contact details on the Council Members page.

New Chair for Shudy Camps Parish Council

At its meeting on 29th June 2020 the Parish Council unanimously elected Anita Kiddy as its new Chair and James Gordon as Vice-Chair following John Haine’s resignation.  John will remain on the Council looking after its web presence and deploying the mobile speed warning sign.
